The Scoop App

The semester is coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean the blogs will stop. I have created an app that gives you easier access to my blogs. The app is easy to navigate and is phone-friendly. The app allows you to read and comment on my blogs on the move. I designed this app to stay up to date with the new technological advances. The image below shows the initial design of the app. It displays some of the foods that will or already have been discussed.

After downloading the app, you will need to create an account. The only information you will need to provide is your full name, phone number, and email address. After confirming all of that information, the login screen should look like the image below. After logging in once, the app will ask you if you want to stay logged in to maximize your time.

Overall, I believe this app is user-friendly and easier to use on a phone than a computer. All of my food blogs will be displayed on the app. It comes with some nice advances like a navigation system, coupons for restaurants, food suggestions, etc. If you enjoyed following my blogs over these past couple of months, the app is a gift to you. My blogs will still be available with the format you’re used to using, but the app gives you another option. The name of the app is “TheScoop” by Kenn. I hope you enjoy! Contact me if you have any questions.

Waffle House

“You should eat a waffle! You can’t be sad if you eat a waffle!”
― Lauren Myracle

I believe almost every college student, or student period, has had the luxury of visiting this restaurant. All you have to do is say the phrase, “All-star special.” Those words are like precious gold in the Waffle-House world. The all-star special is the most popular meal.

I’m sure almost every college student has been, because it is the hot spot after the parties, football games, or even just for a late night meal. It is convenient for students because it is cheap and a local social place.

There are so many mixed reviews about Waffle House. Some people say that the workers are rude and it never gets cleaned because it is open 24 hours. However, I’ve never been to a Waffle House that hasn’t cleaned the table well before I sat down. I make sure it is clean. Also, there are rude workers everywhere, not just waffle house. There are many sweet, energetic workers at Waffle House.

Now, back to the All-Star special. It comes with eggs, toast, your choice of meat (bacon, sausage, or ham) and your choice of grits or hash brown, all for about $7.50. It is my go to every time.

An original picture of my friends and I plates at Waffle House. We each ordered the All-Star special.

Even though I think the All-Star special is the best thing, there are many others that like the other combos that waffle house has. They have breakfast sandwiches, burgers, steak, etc. I believe it is the best breakfast place in existence. However, the only drawback is, there isn’t a waffle house in San Marcos. The closest Waffle House is in Austin, Texas.

subway

“A sandwich is almost like a perfect puzzle.” – Jeff Hardey

I’m almost positive that everyone has heard of one of the fastest growing franchises in America. Subway has been around since 1955. They are known to be on the healthier side of foods. They are known for their different varieties of sandwiches. Additionally, they sell salads, pizzas, wraps, soups, etc.

A photo of the sandwich menu from Subway from the internet.

Subway has a lot of different options for breads, toppings, meats, sauces, etc. Their breads include: white, wheat, Italian, honey oat, flatbread, etc. They inform you of the calories each bread has. My personal favorite is the Italian Herb and Cheese. For their meats, they have turkey breast, ham, chicken breast, roast beef, tuna, turkey salami, beefsteak, bacon, meatballs, pepperoni, Genoa salami, turkey bologna and shaved steak. The toppings include your typical sandwich ingredients. My go to toppings are spinach and lettuce.

It is hard for me to narrow all of the sandwiches down to my favorite, but if I had to choose one, it would be the Italian B.M.T. This sandwich consists of Genoa Salami, spicy pepperoni, and black forest ham. I get my sandwich toasted, then I add spinach, lettuce, mayo, and salt and pepper.

My favorite soup is the chicken noodle soup. However, I often try the soup of the day. The pizzas are kind of like the sandwiches. You add your meats, then add the toppings you want on top of it. My favorite type of pizzas were the “flatizzas” that they sold. They were sold on top of flat bread and were absolutely delicious. They are a limited time item, so when they come back make sure to look out for them.

After you go through the line, making your perfect meal, there’s these little things staring at you at the cash register. They are so hard to pass up. The cookies are the most tempting part of the meal. The worker can heat it up for you so you can eat it right there on the spot. I think it is worth it because the rest of your meal is healthy for the most part.

Subway should be a no-brainier. It is healthy, convenient, inexpensive, and has many different varieties. Eat good food, you deserve it.

blaze pizza

I love pizza. I want to marry it. -Mike Birbiglia

I had the luxury of trying Blaze Pizza for the first time this weekend. My parents came down to San Marcos to watch one of my friend’s volleyball games. Between the games, we wanted to try something new that wasn’t going to be too heavy on our stomachs. We’d heard that Blaze Pizza was like Mod’s Pizza, which I happened to love.

We walked into Blaze with a confused look on all of our faces. I’m assuming the girl behind the counter noticed, so she began to guide us through the whole process. She explained that the most popular was the “build your own” because you pick your choice of bread and add anything you want on there for the same price.

After that news, all of our eyes lit up. We all started to order but all of our orders were different because we all have different preferences. My mother was the first to order. She tries to be healthy, so she ordered a thin crust pizza with chicken and sausage only. However, she put pretty much every vegetable they had on there. Her pizza was stacked with a lot on it, but would probably have a fourth of the calories I was going to have on my pizza.

On the other hand, my younger brother is a very simple guy. He also ordered the thin crust and added sausage and pepperoni. I taunted him because his was plain; he hated to try new things.

Even though my brother was a simple guy, I was the complete opposite. I started a new trend by getting the thick crust. The lady told me it would be more calories, but I told her I wasn’t like my mom and wasn’t really concerned with that. I continued to make myself a meat lovers pizza, I had sausage, bacon, and pepperoni. I wouldn’t have been the athlete that I am without getting something green on my pizza, so I added spinach and mushrooms. On top of that, I let the woman preparing the pizza talk me into getting some type of garlic sauce. My pizza was huge and it was the best-looking pizza I had ever seen. I couldn’t wait for it to come out of the oven.

Comparatively, my twin, otherwise known as my dad, still had to order. We are identical when it comes to food and trying new things. He went the thin crust route, but he also decided to go with the meat lovers pizza. Unlike any of us, he got all of the meats: sausage, bacon, ham, pepperoni, and the meatballs. For his other toppings, he got jalapenos, bell peppers, spinach, and oregano. His pizza was so big that the lady had trouble putting it all together. To be honest, his pizza looked better than mine, but I wasn’t going to let him know that.

An original picture of my mom’s pizza.

My pizza was as good as it looked. I struggled finishing half, considering all of the stuff I had on it. I took the rest of my pizza home. My brother finished all of his scrawny pizza. However, my mom and my dad didn’t finish theirs, so I begged for their leftovers. My dad willingly gave me his pizza, but I had to work on my mom. My argument was that I am a college student, leftovers are like my best friend. After lots of pleading, my mom wound up giving me the rest of her food. Once I put the pizza in the oven a day later, it was just as good as it was the day I got it. I would 100% recommend Blaze Pizza. Eat good food, you deserve it!

akita hibachi sushi

“I can’t stay away from Chinese food. I really love that stuff.” -Shaun White

Growing up, my family has always been a out-to-eat type of family. We ate at a different place every night. It also carried over to my friends, every time we would hang out, we would use our parents money to go out to eat.

On December 14, 2018, my I had a life-changing experience. My best friend had a dinner party at Akita Hibachi Sushi Grill and Bar. I had never been there before so I didn’t know what to expect. My parents gave me some money and told me it was basically Chinese food. I was excited because Chinese food was my favorite food. When I arrived, all of my closest friends were there. We sat down and waited for our waiter to ask us for our drinks. As we waited, I scanned the menu. The menu had a large variety of things. I didn’t know where to start. When it comes to Chinese food, I like the basics: fried rice, shrimp, and chicken. I looked at the menu to find the closest thing to that. I wound up ordering a combination fried rice with extra shrimp. The prices were more than what I was used to for Chinese food, but I didn’t mind because it was my parents money.

As we all ordered our food, our waiter later came out with our drinks and appetizers. Approximately 5 minutes later, a man with white apron and white hat stood in front of us. He proceeded to let us know that he would be preparing our meal. I was confused because I’ve never had a cook come out of the kitchen to introduce themselves to me. Instead of going back in the kitchen, he turned on the light in front of us. To my surprise it was a grill! The chef sprayed down the grill and started preparing all of our meals. He did many tricks with the food to keep us entertained. I was thrilled! I loved the entertainment portion. I just hoped the food tasted half as good.

Now, the moment everybody had been waiting for, the food was now ready to eat. Most people ordered relatively the same thing, but others got sushi, different types of rices and meats, etc. I took one bite of my combination fried rice, and it didn’t disappoint me at all. I kept my head down until I was too full. The amount of food that I had left was shocking. I usually eat all of my food, but they had some big portions and the appetizers were delicious.

Every time I go to Akita, I try to get something different, but still similar to the combination fried rice. Overall, the meals I get are mostly healthy. It is usually always a vegetable in the meals. I would 100% recommend Akita Hibachi Grill and Bar! Eat good food, you deserve it!

super spud

“For me, a baked potato is the most delicious…It is soothing and enough.”

M.F.K. Fisher

A baked potato is a potato that has been baked before eating. Once it is cooked, it should have a fluffy interior and a crisp skin. It is often served with condiments such as butter, cheese, sour cream, bacon bits, ranch, salt and pepper, different kinds of meats, etc.

During my first semester of college, I went to different restaurants trying to find the best baked potato. I tried many barbecue places because they usually have the best meats to put inside of the potato.

However, one day after practice, my boyfriend brought home a large white to-go container. It was a baked potato. It looked like a million dollars. It was perfect, it had melted cheese, brisket, butter, salt and pepper, and ranch on it. I was shocked because I had never seen the name on the bag before. It was called “Spud Ranch.” I asked him why did he go so far just to get me a potato. He answered, “What do you mean far? It’s located right here on Aquarena Springs.” I didn’t want to get my hopes up too high because I hadn’t tried it yet. Once I put one bite into my mouth, it was everything I expected and more.

The first time I went, I ordered the regular baked potato with cheese, butter, bacon bits, and salt and pepper. It was very plain, but it was so good! I had to go back the next day. However, this time I went inside and examined the menu. I ordered the brisket baked potato and my boyfriend ordered the buffalo chicken baked potato. Both of the potatoes are showed below. Also, there are some pictures of the restaurant inside the slideshow as well.

These are original photos from spud ranch.

Spud ranch has a nice variety of option for you to consume. They have appetizers, different spuds, sandwiches, burgers, salads, and deserts. They also deliver for all of the home bodies. I have tried the brisket spud, hot wing spud, Philly cheesecake spud, and the Texas original. None of the spuds have ever disappointed me. They always satisfy my hunger. Also, they have great customer service. I’ve never seen an unfriendly face and I’ve never waited more than five minutes for my food to be served. Spud ranch is a great place to try in San Marcos because it’s delicious, convenient, and inexpensive! Treat yourself with good food, you deserve it!

“Seafood makes you live 10 years more.” -Kevin Steele

Seafood is any form of sea life that is consumed my humans. There are many different types of seafood that humans eat, such as shrimp, lobster, crab, oysters, mussels, fish, etc. Typically, most people describe seafood as being on the healthier side of foods. Seafood provides a sustainable amount of protein, generally low cholesterol, has an abundance of Omega-3 fatty acids, and has many vitamin benefits. On top of that, it all tastes delicious!

Growing up, my parents loved to take my brother and I out on seafood dates. We would usually go to Pappadeaux, Red Lobster, Joe’s Crab Shack, Shell Shack, etc. I always loved seafood, especially the shrimp and crab. However, no matter where we went, my brother would always chose chicken tenders as his meal. He claimed it didn’t smell to his liking, but he was really afraid to step out of his comfort zone. As we got older, my parents started to go on dates without my brother and I, leaving us to fend for ourselves. We weren’t really upset about it because we wanted to hang out with our friends anyways.

As I transitioned to an upperclassman in high school, my graduating class planned to hang out almost every weekend. Our favorite activities, that weren’t constructed by administration, were going to the movies, mall, and go to Shell Shack. We had a specific spot we would meet, because all of the activities were in walking distance of each other. I’m not sure why high-school students continued to decide to meet at a very expensive place, but I wasn’t complaining because I loved seafood.

When I came to college in San Marcos, I was sad because they didn’t have a seafood place. I would’ve had to travel to San Antonio or Austin to get quality seafood. However, a couple of weeks ago, a seafood food truck made its way to San Marcos. As soon as the news hit twitter and Facebook, Krab Kingz was always crowded. All of the students, residents of San Marcos, parents, etc., made their way to the food truck. They sell my favorites, crab, shrimp, sausage, corn, etc.! The thing that drew me to them the most was how inexpensive they were compared to other seafood places.

A photo of the menu from Krab Kingz website.

My first time going to Krab Kingz, I ordered a Kingz Jr. Sampler. I instantly fell in love. Everything was boiled to perfection. It was like heaven in my mouth. The juices of all the meats blended together perfectly. I was like a little kid at the candy store. My roommates went to the food truck with me. One of my roommates only likes fried seafood, so she got a fish and shrimp platter with fries. My other roommate got a large shrimp tray. None of us were disappointed. We made a pack that it was going to be a ritual every week.

Unfortunately, we found out that this particular food truck travels different places every week. On the bright side, it’s base location is Kyle, so it doesn’t go too far. It rotates between Kyle, San Marcos, Buda, Seguin, etc. They also cater to functions. Trust me, this opportunity is not something you want to miss. Treat yourself with good food, you deserve it!

the beast of burgers

“Man who invented the hamburger was smart; man who invented the cheeseburger was a genius.”

– Matthew McConaughey

Last weekend, my best friend and I were contemplating on what we wanted to eat. We were super hungry and realized we didn’t want anything ordinary. It was a gorgeously bright day, the sky was a brilliant light blue and there was a slight breeze. We decided to hop in the mustang and let the top down to see where our stomachs would lead us. After evaluating the area, we saw Popeyes, Wendy’s , Chick-fil-A, Burger King, Pizza Hut, and Golden Chick. However, none of the options were appealing to us because we always eat them. After about 5 more minutes of trying to decide, my stomach started talking to me.

As we kept driving around, we found a tannish cafe by the name of The Coach’s Box. I remember the outside of the cafe had pictures of all the foods they serve. There was a burger, fried wings, catfish, baked chicken breast, barbecue links, baked potato, tacos, etc. My best friend and I eyes lit up because it was new and had many items for us to chose from. As we walked in, we were greeted by a sweet woman who asked us if we wanted to dine in or carry out. We didn’t have anything planned for later on, so we sat down and enjoyed the service.

The official menu from the Coach’s Box website.

The menu had so many options, but I decided to get a cheeseburger basket. My best friend got original fried wings with hot sauce and french fries on the side. The burger and wing basket took approximately fifteen minutes to come out. We asked for the two meals to come out in a to-go container just in case we didn’t finish it all. Our waitress asked what we wanted to drink, but recommended the kool-aid. I usually drink water with all of my meals, but I let that day be my cheat day.

As I opened the box, to my surprise a thick piece of tender beef was centered perfectly with a melted piece of cheese on top. I added bacon to my burger to add a little flavor. They placed a good amount of mayo and lettuce; also, the bun was buttered and toasted. The french fries were crisp band seasoned well. After examining the whole burger, I was ready to devour it.

My burger from the Coach’s Box.

7 words…

It was love at the first bite. I purposely took a big bite of the burger to indulge all of the flavors at once. Next thing I knew, my burger and my french fries disappeared within 3 minutes. I didn’t talk, look up, or drink anything before I finished. I had totally forgot about the kool-aid, but I will never forget it again. It was cold, sweet and delicious. By the time I finished my meal and drink, my best friend had did the same. I was looking forward to trying one of her chicken wings, but I guess I was moving too slow for her. She said they were very tasty though, so guess what I did?

I went back the next day to get a chicken wing basket. The feelings I had for the chicken wings were equivalent to the ones I had for the burger. I wasn’t able to eat it as fast because I drank the kool-aid while I was eating. I told you’ll I won’t forget it again. 😉

Overall, I think the Coach’s Box is a great restaurant. They have many varieties of food. If you want something that tastes good, then everything on the menu is an option. And don’t worry, for my healthy eaters, they have wonderful turkey burgers, grilled chicken breast, salads, etc. Anything that you desire, they have it or have something very similar to it.

The opportunity I am presenting to you is hard to pass up. There aren’t many places that serve all different kinds of foods, have great service, cater to functions, and is convenient. All I’m asking is for you to trust me and give them a try. I’m sure you won’t regret it.

Once you try them out, leave comments and tell me what you thought of the food. Or leave a comment telling me what meal I should try next. I am open to try all new things. Treat yourself with good food, you deserve it!

The Recipe to Me

Hi there, welcome to Here’s the Scoop! I’m Kennedy Taylor: currently a sophomore at Texas State University, now a full-time blogger. I am a native of Dallas, Texas. I am currently majoring in journalism and mass communications with a minor in business management. I have aspirations to work in the athletic realm and become an entrepreneur. I am currently a member of the women’s basketball team at Texas State. In my free time, I enjoy sleeping, hanging out, and most importantly, eating.

Ever since I grew teeth, I’ve always had a fascination for food. If cooked to perfection, I eat every food you can think of: Italian Cuisine, Mexican food, Cajun food, soul food, Chinese food, American food, etc. The part I enjoy most about food is the different varieties. Every dish is unique in its own way. Different foods should be consumed in different circumstances.

In this space, I will be sharing different foods I’d eat at a restaurant. Also, I will discuss foods that I’m not as fond of in the fast food world. I will be respectful, but share my honest opinion with you. My goal is to inspire you with food that is delicious, easily accessible, and overall inexpensive. I am excited to be able to share my experiences with you. I hope you enjoy following Here’s the Scoop! as much as I’m going to enjoy writing it! the best breakfast tacos

Food is for eating, and good food is to be enjoyed… I think food is, actually, very beautiful in itself.”

Delia Smith

Congratulations! You all are witnessing my very first Here’s The Scoop! blog post. Today is the day we start our lifelong friendship of sharing delicious food choices. I couldn’t think of a better way to kick this party off other than my favorite, breakfast. Everybody has an unique routine when they wake up: brush your teeth, use the bathroom, shower, get dressed, make your bed, etc. However, I have a very special routine of my own. I do all of those miscellaneous things, BUT I stop at Lucy’s Tacos every morning. She is an entrepreneur that owns her own food truck right here in San Marcos. I’ve had numerous breakfast tacos but none compare to Lucy’s Tacos.

I love her breakfast tacos. The cheese is always perfectly melted. The eggs are flavored from bite to bite. The sausage or bacon is fried flawlessly. The potatoes are seasoned admirably. Last, but most certainly not least, the tortilla melts in your mouth. Even with tall of these flavors, the taco isn’t unhealthy. The eggs give you protein, the tortilla and potato gives you carbs, the source of meat has a little protein, and the cheese gives it the flavor. The whole taco fits together like puzzle pieces. The best part about it is that it is very inexpensive! All of her tacos are $2.50 at the most! All orders are cooked to order, so it will be hot and ready.

You can’t start the day on an empty stomach. Lucy has many breakfast options. On a breakfast taco, you have the choice of eggs, chorizos, sausage, bacon, potatoes, cheese, etc., with a side of red or green sauce. Also, she makes omelettes and burritos cooked to order. You have the same options as a breakfast taco, with the addition of your traditional extras: onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, spinach, etc. You can’t start the day on an empty stomach, but you can’t get through the day on an empty stomach either. Lucy doesn’t limit herself to only breakfast, but she also has amazing street tacos, burritos, quesadillas, tortas, mini-taquitos, charola fiesta, etc., for reasonable prices.

Everyone who has tasted Lucy’s tacos, including myself, hasn’t left in disappointment. To me, it is a no-brainer. It is affordable, convenient, and most importantly, delicious! If you do decide to tryout Lucy’s Taco, leave a comment and tell me what you thought of it! Treat yourself with good food, you deserve it!
